At the end of chapter 18 (which you read on Monday), why does Okonkwo and the villagers decide against assaulting the missionaries? Where have we seen this same philosophy before?

(without giving it away, they decide that they don't have a good enough reason to in and assault them. What happened? Where have we seen this before?)

1. What period of time is over at the beginning of this chapter? What can now happen?

His exile is ending. At the beginning of his last year in Mbanta, Okonkwo sends money to Obierika in Umuofia to rebuild two huts on the site of his burned-out compound. He will build the remainder when he returns in a year.

2. How does Okonkwo want to show his thanks before leaving Mbanta?
As the time approaches for his family's return to Umuofia, Okonkwo instructs his wives and children to prepare a huge feast for his mother's kinsmen in Mbanta in a gesture to show his gratitude for kindness over the years of exile. Invited to the feast are all the living descendants of an ancestor who lived two hundred years earlier. Family members pick and prepare vegetables, slaughter goats and fowl, and prepare traditional dishes.

3. How has Okonkwo's demeanor changed in this scene? Use one quote to support your answer. Concepts: TRADITION, OBLIGATIONS, PROSPER, APPRECIATION, WORRY KINSHIP . Title THINGS FALL APART resonates here. Quotes in BOLD
Okonkwo 's insistence on adhering to tradition and expectations is once again on display. The feast must be big because he "cannot live on the bank of a river and wash my hands with spittle." Okonkwo views the feast as both a social obligation and a chance to show how he has prospered. Okonkwo regrets having left Umuofia. He believes the exile has held him back; he would have prospered even more in Umuofia. Okonkwo also feels more comfortable in Umuofia because the "men were bold and warlike."

4. When the oldest member of the "umanna" speaks (page 154), what does he blame the appearance of missionaries on? Younger generation does not understand the bond of kinship. See attached quote below

5. (writing question, 4-5 sentences). Write YOUR prediction
Chapter 19 ends with Mbanta praising Okonkwo for his generosity. Write a brief prediction on what will in happen in part 3? Why does Okonkwo want to come home, and what will happen when he does?

Part 4 photo is attached below here.
