1. Yesterday, I had you talk a little about what "assimilation" is. Today we'll be talking about one specific form of it:
Using the internet, look up the definition for the word "missionary". Once you have that, write a 2-3 sentence prediction on how the missionaries will either help or hurt Umuofia.
(you can write that they'll do both in your answer)

Past due Chapter 13
1. Who dies at the beginning of this chapter?
Okonkwo's accidental killing of a clansman Ezeudu
is a crime against the earth goddess, and he knows that he and his family must leave Umuofia for seven years.
The last time we saw him, what was this character telling to Okonkwo?
The last time Ezeudu visited him was to warn him against taking part in Ikemefuna's death. Since Ezeudu was a great warrior who took three of the clan's four titles, his funeral is large and elaborate. The men beat drums and fire their guns. Okonkwo's gun accidentally goes off and kills Ezeudu's sixteen-year-old son.
2. Describe Ezuedo's funeral using a quote.
“The cannon seemed to red the sky.”
What cultural similarities (or differences) do you notice between the way they hold a funeral and the way our society would?
Different from family funerals, similar to military with the cannon or police or soldier gun salute.
3. At the bottom of page 123, find a quote that describes the wishes to Ezuedo in the afterlife. What are the meanings of these wishes? Quote below, take any amount you want. He wants to be remembered after he dies.
4. How does part 1 end? In the seven years that Okonkwo was exiled, things began falling apart in his village. In only seven years, Okonkwo does not recognize his village. The irony is in the fact that Okonkwo cannot get his village leaders to go to war.
5. Writing Question (1 brief paragraph).
- Write about how "justice" is handled throughout the story (Ikemefuna's fate, the Egwugwu, Okonkwo's banishment, etc...).
How does their justice system work? Banishment mostly. Sometimes death.
Are the results of their justice system fair, or harsh?
Can argue harsh and prison better?
If you could, what suggestions might you make to them?
Rehabilitation?
