Write a 2-paragraph response to the following prompt:

Women suffer great losses in this novel but also, in certain circumstances, hold tremendous power. What role do women play in Okonkwo’s life? Is there any difference between his interaction with specific women and his understanding of women and femininity in general?

1. Your response must be 2 paragraphs
2. You must use at least one quote.

(For your first paragraph, discuss the roles of Ekwefi, Ezinma, Chielo, and Nwoye's mother. How do they all affect or see Okonkwo differently?)

(For your second paragraph, write about how Okonkwo sees THEM. Are they all the same to him? Does he respect certain women more than others?

Letter Prompt:

You're writing a letter to a member of the village of Umuofia. Your letter should consist of comparisons of culture and personal experience. There is a rubric attached here. Once you've decided who you're going to write to, please write about at least 3 of the following topics:

- How do you think they'd feel about gender roles in the US? What differences are you going to point out to them?

- What moments of US history would you feel the need to tell them about? (The Civil War? The Civil Rights Movement? The election of Barack Obama?). Why would these be worth explaining to a foreigner?

- What are parts of African Culture do you find most interesting? What have you learned from either your research of African countries or through Things Fall Apart that you'd like to discuss with them?

- What parts of your character's story have been the most interesting to you? What sort of things are you hoping will eventually happen to you?

- What questions would you ask them? Would you ask them about their culture or personal lives?

- If there's anything else you'd like to include, please feel free!
