The Quotation Identification Question:
In this kind of writing assignment you are being asked to “explain” a selected quotation from the text of a novel, short story or, frequently, a play.  Focus on the “importance” of the quotation. The importance will be in one (or sometimes more) of the following 3 ideas:
1.        How does the quotation reveal the character?
a.        Does it show the character to be fair, emotional, ambitious, sneaky …….
2.       How does the quotation advance the plot?
a.       Does the action identified in the quotation cause the next action?
b.      Does it contrast with another action?
c.       Does it raise a question the main character must deal with?
3.        How does the quotation reflect a theme?
a.       Do the words of the quotations raise questions about the main concern of the story?
Tips to always remember:
1.        Always identify the character being described within the first few sentences.
2.       Explain briefly what is happening or has just happened or will happen.
3.       State the importance of the quotation
4.       Explain how the surrounding lines support the importance of this quote.

In paragraph form, choose and analyze a quote from the first section of “The Odyssey”. Please adhere to proper rules of grammar and sentence structure in your writing. Introduce the quotation, then simply try to answer the 3 questions above to finish off your paragraph (some of the questions have multiple parts!).
